I'm in the beginning phases of looking into the purchase of a classic wooden yacht. Naturally the Trumpy name comes up again and again. I've noticed that several listings on Yachtworld include the title, "Houseboat." Does this differ from other Trumpy yachts, or are they simply "big as a house?" I'm looking for a boat that can comfortably (very comfortably!) cruise the Caribbean in the winter and travel up the eastern seaboard to Nova Scotia in the summer. Many thanks!

Greetings, The term "houseboat" generally refers to the deckhouse style yacht where there is living space all at full deck level, with the steering station or pilothouse at the forward end. The sleeping space and sometimes the galley are below. In contrast, a "cruiser" style Trumpy is more like a split level arrangement in that you enter on deck level, the saloon would be 4 steps below forward, then the sleeping quarters and galley would be 4 steps below the saloon, either forward or aft. This is a cruiser: This is a houseboat: If you're shopping for a boat, there is a fairly good selection of inventory available now. You should easily find a suitable craft for your intended use. Good luck!

Trumpy Yachts are great live-aboards (I owned and lived on mine for 5 years) but for the type of cruising you're talking about, I might suggest a vessel that draws a bit more than Trumpys. Trumpy designed them primarily for inland waterways so they are fairly round or flat on the bottom, only drawing 4 or 5 feet at best. This makes for a "rolling" ride in blue water, especially in the winter when you hit the gulf stream off of the Florida coast. I've seen my sofa catapulted 15 feet across the salon once or twice. same thing goes for Nova Scotia. You can easily see swells of 8-10 feet come from nowhere off the coast wherever you might cruise, so pick the calm days carefully if you go with a Trumpy.

I would have to agree with JohnB, i have been living aboard my Trumpy (contract #402) for 4 years now, 1 in Ft. Myers Florida, and since 2004 here on the York River in Virginia. Fantasic live-aboard and great bay/ICW cruiser, but I am not sure I would be comforatable offshore. Last year we had 3-5 foot chop during our local lighted boat parade and we took a bit of a beating when we had to turn and take the waves abeam. We did get second place however Good luck in your search, hopefully you will love living aboard as much as I do.
