In my research of the Trumpy yacht "Southern Trail" which was built in 1926 I have been researching some info on the Trumpy name and the boat yard.
I understand that the company was not called John Trumpy and Sons until '48 and that the boat yard was not always in Anapolis.
Where was this boat built and what was the company name at the time? Also is it likely that John Trumpy would have been the designer at that time?

Chris Southern Trail was built by Mathis Yacht company in Camden N.J. John Trumpy was the navel architect for that company. John Trumpy bought Mathis in 1946. I was on the Southern Trail in the 1980s when she was owned by the Castro Convertible Furniture people, she was at that time in magnificent condition,. I again saw her in early 1990s when she was for sale, she had a lot of rot and a badly oil leaking port engine. If you can get a copy of Robert Tolf's book "Trumpy" all of her owners are listed there. This by the way is a great history of the Trumpy Family boat building years. I hope this helps Best of luck Sam duPont

Can you remember who it was that had her for sale? I have the list of owners from that book. provided by Jerry Foster which is where they got it from.
Finding the last owners has proven to be difficult. The second to last owner is listed at "Ken Bracewell" and asside from some obscure internet references I cant find anything about him or any contact info.
Heard that it also sank in detroit and was raised and taken to toronto according to Jerrys notes. Would love more info on the sinking, who recovered her and who took her to toronto etc.
We have pretty good indications that she was stripped of anythign valuable and sunk on purpose.
Also looking for anyone who was on her near the end (90s) as I would love to confirm the layout etc. This will bring us that last 5 % tot he positive id.

Chris, With the US Coast Guard Doc # you could run an abstract of title for $25. to get the ownership records on file with the Coast Guard. Of course when yachts become "salvage" the chain of title disappears as the ownership transfers generally don't include proper paperwork and recording. Also, check ebay item #6553170365 I think its an old advertisement for your subject yacht. Good luck. Eric Horst

Will the cg abstract have more than the names? I have the names already and have found lots of information on all but the last two. One is "Ken Bracewell" and the other is just listed as "Marine Reserve Service Inc." which I am not able to find as a company on the web or in the online phone directory.

Southern Trail was not actually in Detroit. She was moored in a slip in Windsor, Ontario. The slip was in a defunct factory area of Windsor. During that summer, shortly after she entered the area she was lifted out of the water, as I recall, with two moble cranes. She had some hull repairs made and then returned to the water. Several visits later someone smashed out all of her beautiful windows, including the elegant curved glass windows that defined the begining of the dining salon. Shortlyafter another visit, to add insult to injury, she was set on fire. It wasn't too long thereafter that she was, sadly, sunk in her slip. The Windsor police and Immigration - Marine Office were well aware of the presence of Southern Trail. They expressed very strong opinions regarding the chain of events. Sometime thereafter the Windsor Marine office said someone raised her and towed her to Toronto. I have photos of Southern Trail when she was in Windsor before and after the vandalism. I also have historical interior and exterior photos. I need to scan them to disc. When I do, I will then post them on this site. Wayne

Thank you for the info. I would be very interested in this information.
Do you remember what year this happened in?
Also does anyone know definativly where the CG hull number would be? I have been told that it could be on a beam in the engine stringer and that it may be on a beam near the forward hatch.
